Five Apps Fight Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

Some time ago, short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower measured about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US generating 49% of it. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M, while full-year 2025 ended up at roughly $2.8–3B. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that dominate the conversation, and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has met at least one of them. Superficially, they appear identical: https://vertical-drama.net/series/when-distance-became-his-answer/ vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Underneath, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that change what you pay and where you can watch. Across six rounds, we named a winner each time, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Master Comparison Grid

Before the rounds begin, here is the entire field on one screen. Prices are the figures listed in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. The install counts are taken from each app’s Google Play listing. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so where no reliable source released the figure, the cell says “not reported”. Use the grid as the scoreboard and treat the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Size

ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still has the most weight. MPA assigns it about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group. MPA also estimates its 2025 revenue at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Released in April 2023 and now holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. ReelShort led $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, yet it already holds about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. Operating from Hong Kong, ShortMax seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Sitting just outside this lineup, GoodShort has, for context, about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, by a narrow margin, on market share.

Round 2: Cost

The apps look most alike in this round. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave offers a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. In addition, ShortMax lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. DramaBox takes a different route: auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99. The standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the smarter buy for steady viewers. Prices change by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

Free viewing is the topic where the marketing turns loud and the details get thin. Per ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. Checking in seven days in a row earns 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Keep away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.

Round 4: Screens and Platforms

On screens, these apps truly split apart. ReelShort is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it streams as well in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website. DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app, while DramaWave’s verified presence consists of its iOS and Android apps. My Drama plays the trump card, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. If all you need is a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama taking the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

By raw numbers, ShortMax is in a league of its own. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. According to reports, more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s response. My Drama has the most intriguing pipeline, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Round winner: ShortMax, on pure volume.

Round 6: Perks and Fine Print

DramaWave runs away with this one. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video all appear in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. The next most useful perk, for viewers who move between phone and laptop, is ReelShort’s cross-device sync. Because it varies more than the prices do, the fine print merits a look too. ShortMax’s terms state that refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”; My Drama, for its part, forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. On any of these apps, deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Round winner: DramaWave.

Best For: The Final Verdict

No single short drama app takes every round, which means the best choice depends on how you watch. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. On Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. On sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that overshadow everything else in the grid. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, as it combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. Ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader. ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. When all five tempt you, choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
